Lymphatic Drainage vs. Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage: Whats the Difference?
Lymphatic Drainage vs. Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage: What's the Difference?
You’ve probably heard the words “lymphatic drainage” everywhere lately. But here's the thing: not every lymphatic treatment is the same. There are different techniques, different approaches and different reasons someone might have lymphatic treatment.
At Sculptaé, we specialise in Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage (BLD) — an aesthetic, hands-on treatment with a strong focus on sculpting and contouring the body.
So, what actually is the difference? Let's get into it.
A LITTLE HISTORY
Before Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage became popular in the beauty and wellness world, there were already established approaches to Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD). One of the best-known is the Vodder Method, developed by Danish practitioners Emil and Estrid Vodder in the 1930s. The method was presented publicly in Paris in 1936 and uses specific, gentle and rhythmic movements. It became particularly associated with lymphoedema care and clinical lymphatic treatment.
Another approach, the Godoy & Godoy Method, was developed later in Brazil by José Maria Pereira de Godoy and Maria de Fátima Guerreiro Godoy. Their approach was developed in the 1990s and incorporated specific techniques for working along lymphatic vessel pathways.
So, while these approaches all involve the lymphatic system, they aren't simply different names for the same treatment.
SO, WHAT IS MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage, often shortened to MLD, is a specialised manual technique. It typically uses light, gentle and rhythmic movements designed to encourage lymph fluid movement through functioning lymphatic pathways. MLD is commonly used within clinical lymphoedema care and may form part of a wider treatment plan alongside things such as compression, exercise and skin care.
It's therefore important to understand that clinical MLD isn't simply a massage designed to make your waist look smaller. Its purpose and application can be very different depending on the individual and their medical needs.
AND THEN THERE'S BRAZILIAN LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE
This is where things get interesting.
Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage is commonly offered as a more aesthetic, body-focused approach.
Rather than the treatment being centred solely around clinical lymphatic care, BLD is often associated with firmer, rhythmic and sculpting movements across the body.
At Sculptaé, this is exactly where our approach comes in. Our BLD is performed entirely by hand, using intentional movements across the body with a focus on its natural contours. We're not trying to force your body into a different shape. We're working with your body's contours to create a treatment experience focused on sculpting, definition and that lighter feeling.
The intended experience is to leave you feeling lighter, less puffy and more defined, particularly when temporary bloating or fluid-related changes are contributing to how your body looks and feels.
SO, WHAT'S THE ACTUAL DIFFERENCE?
Think of it like this:
Clinical MLD
→ Gentle and rhythmic
→ Focused on lymphatic care
→ Commonly used in lymphoedema management
→ Performed according to the individual's clinical needs
Sculptaé BLD
→ Rhythmic and more sculpting-focused
→ Designed as an aesthetic body treatment
→ Focused on body contours and definition
→ Completely hands-on
→ Tailored around your aesthetic goals
Neither is about being “better.”
They're simply designed around different purposes.
If someone needs lymphatic treatment for a medical condition or post-operative care, they should seek advice from an appropriately qualified healthcare professional or specialist to determine what treatment is suitable.
If you're looking for an aesthetic treatment focused on sculpting, contouring and that lighter, more defined feeling, BLD may be the approach you're looking for.
THE SCULPTAÉ APPROACH
At Sculptaé, we don't believe in a one-size-fits-all treatment.
Every body is different. Your lifestyle is different. Your goals are different. And the way your body looks and feels can change from day to day.
That's why your treatment is approached around YOU — your body, your goals and the areas you want to focus on.
BLD isn't about forcing the body into a different shape.
It's about working with your natural contours and using intentional hands-on techniques to create a sculpted treatment experience that feels as good as it looks.
Because sometimes, it's not about changing your body.
It's about seeing what was already there.
